A 6.5" x 6.5" Traditional St. Brigid's Cross.

Saint Brigid of Kildare is the only female patron saint of Ireland. While she has no historical record, most information about her life and work is derived from texts written by the monk Cogitosus in the 7th century, believed to be 200 years after her birth.

Brigid's cross is a national symbol of Ireland, alongside the shamrock and harp. The Christian belief behind her cross is that Brigid, while sitting at the deathbed of a pagan chieftain, wove the cross out of rushes while she told the story of the Crucifixion of Jesus, after which the chieftain requested a Christian baptism. Another popular belief is that after Brigid was poisoned, she wove the cross to neutralize the toxins and lived.

Saint Brigid's Cross is often hung above windows, doorways, and stables to welcome Brigid and to protect against fire, lightning, and illnesses.

Saint Brigid's Feast Day is February 1st, which also coincides with the ancient Celtic festival of Imbolc.
