This beautiful Mullingar Pewter wall cross married two of Irelands most famous designs. With its Claddagh and intertwining Celtic knots, this stunning Celtic cross is a phenomenal gift for first time homeowners or well loved domiciles. This Irish made pewter is a wonderful addition to any Irish home.
The legend of the Claddagh says that a Galway native was captured by pirates and sold into slavery, during which time he was taught goldsmithing. After his release he returned to Claddagh, Galway, he found his love still waiting for him. It was for her he created the Claddagh ring- the heart symbolising love, the hands friendship, and the crown loyalty.
Of the Celtic Cross, one legend tells of how St. Patrick saw a pagan standing stone imprinted with a circle, the symbol of the moon goddess. After blessing the stone he marked it with a Latin cross to bring the two religions together and ease Ireland's transition into Christianity. The Celtic knots, so often seen on High Crosses throughout Ireland, have their roots in truly ancient Irish art and monuments.
